As part of recreational marijuana legalization, the state of Nevada is responsible for regulating businesses that participate in the marijuana industry. Only businesses licensed by the state specifically for marijuana operations are legally allowed to grow, manufacture, test, distribute, or sell marijuana in Nevada. Consumers may only legally buy retail marijuana from a state-licensed retail store. On November 8, 2016, Nevada voters passed the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act (Ballot Question 2). The Act legalized the purchase, possession, and consumption of recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older.
Who Oversees the MJ Program in Nevada?
Assembly Bill 533 established the Cannabis Compliance Board during the 2019 legislative session and granted the board full oversight of the recreational marijuana program in Nevada. The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board governs Nevada’s cannabis industry through strict regulation of all areas of its licensing and operations, protecting the public health and safety of Nevada citizens and visitors while holding cannabis licensees to the highest ethical standards.
