In 2010 New Jersey adopted the Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act. The program was slow to start and had little support from the state’s governor.

On July 16, 2018, the New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) has issued a Request for Applications (RFA) for up to six additional Alternative Treatment Centers (ATCs) in the state, two in each of the northern, southern and central regions.
“Alternative treatment center” or “ATC” means the permitted alternative treatment center authorized to grow and provide registered qualifying patients with usable marijuana and related paraphernalia in accordance with the provisions of the “New Jersey Compassionate Use Marijuana Act,” N.J.S.A. 24:6I-1 et seq. (the Act).
The application instructions, including all forms were made available on the DOH website on August 1st, 2018.
