In 2000, Nevada voters approved medical marijuana by ballot initiative. The Medical Use of Marijuana Act NRS 453A.120 enabled the use of medical marijuana in Nevada in 2001. These laws allowed qualifying patients to apply for registry identification cards to use medical marijuana for certain chronic or debilitating conditions. Medical Patients will be taxed differently than adult use and will have access to higher dosed cannabis packages.
Who Oversees the MMJ Program in Nevada?
In 2013, the Legislature approved Senate Bill 374 (Chapter 547, Statutes of Nevada), directing the Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH), Department of Health and Human Services, to develop regulations and authorize licensed and registered establishments to produce, test, and dispense medical marijuana and marijuana-infused products. Assembly Bill 533 established the Cannabis Compliance Board during the 2019 legislative session and granted the board full oversight of the medical marijuana program.
