Medical marijuana has been legal in Alaska since 1998, however, dispensaries and commercial production was never allowed. Medical legalization allowed protection for patients with qualifying conditions, Cachexia Cancer Chronic Pain Glaucoma HIV or AIDS Multiple Sclerosis Nausea Seizures, to grow and possess marijuana for medical purposes. Legalization legislation did not effect the existing medical marijuana program. Except now, patient can shop for their medicine, instead of growing their own!
Who Oversees the Medical Program in Alaska?
Three agencies oversee different aspects of the medical marijuana program in Alaska. The Marijuana Control Board is established as a regulatory and quasi-judicial agency for the control of the cultivation, manufacture and sale of marijuana in the state. The Department of Revenue is responsible collecting the taxes imposed when marijuana is sold or transferred from a marijuana cultivation facility to a retail marijuana store or marijuana product manufacturing facility. Lastly, the Department of Health and Social Services oversees patient registration and approval.
