After decades of prohibition in the US, at the federal level, states have begun regulating cannabis sales. Under the Obama Administration the Department of Justice has issued memo's supporting a states right to regulate cannabis sales so long as it did not contradict federal priorities.
Currently, Twenty-eight states and the District of Columbia (DC) currently have laws legalizing cannabis (or marijuana) in some form.
Four states and the DC have legalized marijuana for adult use. Each state is defining its own rules on how much consumers can purchase or grow. In 2015 and 2016 Oregon and Alaskan voters approved a measures allowing adults to posses up to an ounce of marijuana in public and allowed for more and plants in the privacy of their homes. Colorado and Washington previously passed similar rules legalizing marijuana in 2012. California, Nevada and Arizona could likely become the next states to legalize marijuana for adult use as voters consider a ballot initiative later this year.
MPP has been responsible for most of the major state-level marijuana policy reforms enacted in the past decade. According to their own website:
"MPP is devoting significant resources to ending prohibition in 12 more states by 2019. We’re supporting ballot initiative campaigns to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol in 2016 in Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada. MPP is also lobbying and building coalitions to regulate marijuana like alcohol in several states that do not have the option of voter initiatives: Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Texas, and Vermont. In the states where cannabis has not already been decriminalized — New Hampshire and Texas — we are working to achieve that reform first. MPP is also advocating for medical marijuana-related bills in several other states, including Georgia, Louisiana, Nebraska, Texas, and West Virginia and providing funding for medical marijuana initiative efforts in Arkansas and Missouri."
