Intro to Cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana
Marijuana and Hemp are common names for the cannabis plant.
The marijuana symbol is seen everywhere these days — on clothing, jewelry, keychains and stickers. I bet you have heard about Hemp your entire life and have noticed its “momentum” with the developing interest in natural foods and supplements. Incase you haven’t heard, Hemp seeds are all the rage.
It’s no surprise that cannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug in the U.S. and worldwide. Some States and countries have legalized cannabis in different forms, such as Hemp Only or Marijuana for medical patients.
So, what is the difference between Hemp and Marijuana?
The growing popularity of marijuana is evident, but many people lack a basic understanding of the complex plant.
Hemp is derived from the Cannabis plant.
Cannabis is believed to be one of the original domesticated crops and likely an original commodity. Throughout history, humans have grown different varieties of cannabis for industrial and medical uses.
Tall and sturdy plants were grown outdoor by early farmers and civilization to make a variety of foods, oils and textiles, such as rope and fabrics. Plants were bred with other plants and genetics were altered over time. Of course, we didn’t have awesome science and data from plant genetic attribute testing like we do now!
Marijuana is derived from the Cannabis plant.
The cannabis plant, referred to as marijuana, usually grows about 8 to 12 feet high and can be grown outdoors or indoors.
The main active ingredient in marijuana is THC. THC is what causes the majority of psychoactive effects. Different marijuana products have different levels of THC.
The term “marijuana” or the term “cannabis” can also refer to any product that is derived from the plant, including the three major types: Marijuana Flowers, hashish and hash oil, usually these contain THC.
Cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana are Often Interchangeable in Discussion.
Hemp, which as we just learned is cannabis cultivated for industrial use or purposes other than human consumption, continues to be manufactured and distributed around the world. “Marijuana” is recognized for being psychoactive and has been bred selectively for medical, religious or recreational purposes, and is highly regulated and banned in many countries.
Breeding for various Cannabis genetic traits has led to unique varieties of cannabis that we now refer to as “Strain Names.”
The modern day understanding of hemp vs marijuana is that hemp has almost zero THC. Advanced science, extraction and manufacturing methods and data collection, we are now able to distinguish the risk of someone experiencing psychoactive (or unwanted negative effects) better than most pharmaceuticals prescribed.
Now, with development in Regulating Cannabis in the USA, we are able to advance research of hemp and marijuana for all purposes to better a humans life and/or as a sustainable world commodity.
Hemp importing and sales has been a constantly growing market since the prohibition of cannabis in 1937. While both Hemp and Marijuana manufacturing has remained illegal, the importing of Hemp has been allowed. The Hemp Industry world wide has grown without manufacturing or distribution support of the US Federal Government.
Cannabis Regulation is allowing for more products to be made from cannabis than ever before. Cannabis is now being served as dry cannabis flower, concentrates made for inhalation, concentrated oils and butters, edibles, tinctures, topicals and more! Cannabis Products are quickly advancing in their quality and marketability.
